How GST works in Australia
The goods and services tax is 10% on most goods and services sold in Australia. Some things are GST-free, including most basic food, many health and medical services, and most education courses.
- To add GST: multiply the price by 1.1. $100 becomes $110.
- To find the GST in a price: divide by 11. $110 includes $10 GST.
- To remove GST: divide by 1.1. $110 becomes $100.
Businesses must register for GST once their turnover reaches $75,000 a year ($150,000 for non-profits), and taxi and ride-share drivers must register from their first dollar. Check the details with the ATO for your situation.
